Evidence of clinical and antibacterial effectiveness of textiles containing silver – PLATATEX®
Eczema (endogenic ekzema, atopic dermatitis) is considered a genetically hereditary, chronical illness, that erupts in phases and cannot be healed. It is characterized by an inflammation of the skin's surface. At the moment it is the most frequent illness afflicting children. The annual increase lies at approximately 6 to 7 %, i.e. 500 000 new patients per year! Excema is a source of frustration for both the patient and the medical doctor treating it. Most patients look back on an odysee of doctor's appointments, cures and stays in clinics without significant improvement of their skin. Often patients give up in the face of treatments, cortisone ointments, radiation, diets, baths, etc. offered by dermatorogists and pediatricians.
Only genetic technology offers the possibility of healing eczema, but since this route will not be accessible now or in the near future, the current types of treatment are limited to fight respectively sooth the symptoms or the changes in the immune system known to medicine up to now. It is apparent that there is an increased allergy potential going along with eczema, i.e. a weakness in the subcutaneous immune system, which provokes eruptions of eczema as well as a transformation of the skin's upper layers due to a deficiency of carbamide, irritated transpiration and a massive colonization of staphylococcus aureus and fungi. The immune system reacts with an overproduction of immunoglobulins (IgE, ECP) of (Interleukinen) histamines and (Leukotrienen). Therefore patients suffer from strong itches and fever attacks due to scratching that transports bacteria through the skin's surface into the blood stream irritating the immune system thus worsening the skin's condition further. This viscious cycle should be interrupted by measures that reduce the colonization of germs on the skin.
For approximately 60 years medicine has used silver nitrate combinations to soothe bacterial irritations or avoid them altogether e.g. with eye drops for babies after birth or dressings on chapped skin. These findings lead to the application of textiles containing a certain percentage of silver in the treatment of excema in addition to other forms of therapy. An independent research laboratory made a bacteriological analysis and found that textiles containing 8 % of silver, such as PLATATEX, have a distincitly antibacterial effect on staphylococcus aureus, klebsiella, pneumoniae, escherichia coli and salmonella choleasius (see enclosure). After only a few days the number of bacteria decreased tremendously.
In the past 18 years as a general practitioner I have been treating more than 6500 patients including babies, children and adults with eczema. Between December of 2004 and May of 2005 26 babies and toddlers have been treated with PLATATEX pyjamas. All patients show strong symptoms of eczema. No other treatments such as ointments or compresses were applied. The parents were asked to keep a daily journal evaluating the skin's condition, itch and sleep of the child. In addition, the skin's colonization with bacteria was determined. After 2 to 3 weeks the same test was made to see whether the colonization of bacteria has decreased. After 14 to 21 days after the treatment the journals were evaluated. 21 out of 26 children showed a slight to a distinct improvement of the skin and decrease of redness. Some mothers also claim that their child's skin became smoother as well. Eczema patients suffer from a strong itch particularly during the night. 19 out of 26 children slept much better because the itch decreased in some cases even strongly. 22 out of 26 parents are very satisfied with the effect of PLATATEX pyjamas. 2 children showed no positive reaction; however, one of them contracted a virus infection during that time causing a further inflamation of the skin. Due to organizational and technical reasons only 17 children could be examined after 14 days since some of the parents were not able to keep their appointments. Nevertheless, the 17 evaluated cases showed a substantial reduction of staphylococci from „massive“ to „scarce“. Further tests are in process.
From a medical point of view the additional use of the above mentioned pyjamas is a particularly good completion in the treatment of eczema patients.
